The Bade Hanuman Mandir campus in Haridwar currently draws 7 to 8 kW from the grid, and planned expansion will push that demand higher. Electricity is already the campus's largest recurring cost, and a solar system sized for that load is the clearest way to bring it down and move the campus toward energy independence.
The Mandir sits on the banks of Mother Ganga and runs several ongoing programs: community feeding (Annadaan) for ascetics, pilgrims, and the economically disadvantaged; Gau Seva, which shelters and cares for indigenous cows; housing for visiting devotees; and the discourses and traditional education that preserve Vedic knowledge. All of it runs on the same grid connection, so a power failure or a rate hike affects everything at once.
In Uttarakhand, solar does more than cut bills. It reduces dependence on a grid that carries real risk. Despite abundant hydropower, the state still draws thermal power (coal and gas) from the national grid, so on-site solar cuts carbon emissions at the source. Himalayan hydropower construction also carries hazards in this tectonically active, ecologically fragile region (Seismic Zones IV and V): tunnelling and blasting destabilize slopes and raise landslide risk, construction debris was identified by experts as a factor in the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, and river diversion damages aquatic ecosystems. Decentralized solar sidesteps that risk and gives the campus a stable, locally generated supply.
The project installs a 35 kW Solar Hybrid System (expandable to 70 kW or 140 kW) alongside an energy-efficient heat-pump water-heating system for the kitchens and devotee facilities. The total project cost is ₹53,20,000 (approx. $61,149): ₹40,35,000 ($46,379) for the solar hybrid system, ₹8,50,000 ($9,770) for the heat pump, and ₹4,35,000 ($5,000) for associated construction not covered by the equipment installation.
The payoff goes beyond the electricity bill: added resilience against grid failures and regional disasters, a cost cut of 84 to 93%, roughly 30 tons of CO₂ offset a year, and support for Agri-PV integration with the Mandir's cultivation work. Over its operating lifetime, the system is projected to save more than ₹1.1 crore (approx. $126,437), money that can go toward Dharmic activities instead of power bills.
